HSE-compliant pendulum slip resistance testing and risk assessments. Accurate results, clear reporting, and nationwide coverage.

What Is Slip Testing?

Slip resistance testing measures how likely a floor surface is to cause a slip or fall. It is a critical part of any health and safety compliance programme, particularly for commercial, retail, industrial, and public-facing premises.

At Pennine Compliance Group, we carry out rigorous, reliable, and fully HSE-compliant slip resistance testing across the UK. Our experienced consultants use state-of-the-art pendulum test equipment to deliver the most accurate results.

Our Testing Standards: BS EN 16165:2021

The current British Standard for slip resistance testing is BS EN 16165:2021. This standard replaced the older BS 7976-2 (the “Pendulum Test”) to align UK practices with European standards.

If you are looking for the “Pendulum Test” specifically, it is now found under Annex C of this new standard.

Pro-Tip: If you are dealing with a legal claim or a building sign-off, ensure your tester references BS EN 16165:2021 Annex C. Reports using the withdrawn BS 7976-2 might be considered technically outdated.

Our Slip Testing Services

Pendulum Slip Testing (Annex C)

The pendulum test is the “gold standard” in the UK for measuring friction in both wet and dry conditions. We utilize specific sliders based on your environment:

  • Slider 96 (Four-S): Used to simulate standard footwear (shod).
  • Slider 57 (TRL): Used to simulate barefoot conditions, such as swimming pools or bathrooms.

Safety Thresholds (PTV Benchmarks)

We use the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) benchmarks to classify your floor’s Pendulum Test Value (PTV):

  • 0–24 PTV: High Slip Potential
  • 25–35 PTV: Moderate Slip Potential
  • 36+ PTV: Low Slip Potential

Surface Microroughness Testing

Using precision Rz meters, we assess the microscopic profile of your floor. Microroughness helps predict when a surface may need treatment or replacement to maintain compliance.

Slip Risk Assessments

We provide comprehensive assessments for insurance compliance and HSE inspections. Our reports cover the full range of factors including floor condition, contamination, cleaning regimes, and footwear.

Why You Need Slip Testing

Slips and trips are the most common cause of workplace injury in the UK. According to the HSE:

  • Slips and trips account for over a third of all reported major workplace injuries.
  • The average cost of a slip claim is £14,000.
  • 95% of major slips result in broken bones.
